Local 153 Endorses Zohran Mamdani for NYC Mayor
New York, NY - Today the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153 announced its enthusiastic endorsement of Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City.
The union’s executive board endorsed Mamdani following a comprehensive survey of Local 153 members, which indicated overwhelming support of the candidate. His commitment to affordable housing, a city-wide rent freeze, fast and free buses, and universal childcare aligns with Local 153’s dedication to improving quality of life for union members - in our workplaces, in our communities and beyond.
Local 153 members are working-class New Yorkers employed in a wide range of industries from health care and nonprofits to higher education and tech. It is clear Mamdani’s campaign and its theme, “A City We Can Afford,” resonates heavily among rank-and-file union members, who guided this endorsement.
“At a time when workers’ rights are under attack by an administration that caters to billionaires at the expense of working people, Local 153 listened to our members and we are proud to endorse a candidate with a proven track record of fighting for dignity for all workers. Local 153 stands with Zohran Mamdani in his campaign to build a city we can afford,” said Jessica Timo, president of OPEIU Local 153.
